Catchment Management at Portsmouth Water

Nitrate levels in groundwater are deteriorating to such an extent that the long term trends show levels that are exceeding drinking water quality standards. At Portsmouth Water, we have a Catchment Team that has developed catchment based schemes to incentivise farmers and landowners to reduce nitrate leaching in to groundwater so that water quality can improve over time. We are running a 5 year programme to target land in our high priority catchments to financially support a range of schemes such as cover crops, arable reversion, precision farming, soil sampling and nutrient management plans. This infographic shows progress so far at an early stage of the scheme in 2019/20. We hope to update these on a yearly basis.
